You have been hired as a graphic designer and cartographer to choose and redesign a national park map/brochure of the national park to honor the 101st anniversary of the National Park Service. Here are the steps for your task:
1. Look through the example brochures, and decide which national park you will research. Look for the components listed in steps 9 and 10.
2. Go to the National Park website, and search for your park. Click on the link below to get there:
3. Split your screen with the map of your national park on one side, and ArcGIS on the other side. Click this link to open ArcGIS:
4. Match your map in ArcGIS with the map of your national park. This can be tricky, so be patient, and make sure you observe the details of both maps while doing this.
5. Outline a minimum of THREE trails on your map in ArcGIS using the line tool, and using the National Park Service website for reference.
6. Take a screen shot of your map, using SHIFT, COMMAND, 4. Then, draw a box (click and drag) around the image you want to save. The image will save to your desktop.
7. Open a brochure template Pages document.
8. Delete everything on the second page of the template and Import the image of your map, and size it so it takes up the entire second page.
9. Add these components to your map:
The title of your national park, and your first name only
A minimum of two text boxes of information
Graphics (arrows, lines, symbols, etc...)
Trail labels for all the trails you outlined
Park facilities (example: trash cans, camp grounds, visitor centers, etc...)
Any other components you think are necessary
See the below picture from Mr. Weimer as an example of graphics, symbols, text boxes and titles you can create over your map in Pages:

10. On the front page of your brochure, you must include a minimum of THREE of these components (you must include one scientific and one historical):
Wildlife information
Habitats and ecosystems
Geology
Comparative diagrams
Historical information and facts
Timelines
Safety Warnings/Park Regulations
Park activities (biking, hiking, guided tours, etc...)
Any other components you think are necessary
While completing this step, use the National Park Service website for reference. First, you will take notes in your notebook (not complete sentences, just notes). Then, you will transfer that information into your brochure in your own words. You will need to add photos into your brochure from the National Park Service website, and you must include the name of the photographer, and the caption of the photo to give credit.
11. Cite your source (National Park Service website) in the bottom right corner of your second page.
12. This step will be for one person who is done will ALL of the above steps. Create your own logo honoring the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service, and send it to your classmates to include in all the brochures we create. Use the below images/information for reference/inspiration:
